Garden Classes
The Community Garden at Holy Nativity, in conjunction with the Environmental Change-Makers, offers an ongoing series of free Organic Vegetable Gardening classes to the greater community.
These classes are given on selected Saturday mornings, and are often followed by a light workday in the Garden. Some classes are designed in hands-on “workshop” format.
The classes rotate through various garden topics, often scheduled to match the seasonal Caretaking needs of the Community Garden.
Announcements of upcoming classes are posted on the garden blog and on the calendar (see column to right).
Notes and resources from the following past classes are available online:
- Soil Building. Organic gardening all begins with healthy, alive soil.
- Rainwater Harvesting. How we installed a Rainwater Harvesting Garden at our site, and how you can too.
- Seed Saving. How to save seed from many of our familiar (and not so familiar) vegetables.
- Vegetable Rotations / Winter Vegetables. The cool season is one of enormous bounty in Southern California. How do you rotate vegetables to get the most from your garden soil?
- Introduction to Organic Gardening. The main concepts from our intro class are online here.
- A list of organic vegetable gardening resources for Los Angeles is online here.
Classes take place at the Community Garden at Holy Nativity, 6700 W. 83rd (Dunbarton & 83rd), Westchester (Los Angeles 90045). Sometimes we meet in Classroom 5 (its door opens into the south end of the Garden) or in the Community Hall (the brick building on Dunbarton).
The Organic Gardening Class series at the Community Garden is free and open to all, even if you are not a caretaker at our Community Garden.
