Garden Layout and Water Needs
Here’s a design view of the garden for reference. You can download and print the full-sized image from this link: http://www.holynativityparish.org/images/GardenPlan.jpg which will enable you to read the names on the beds and get a good idea of the size of each one. The design is drawn to scale on graph paper, with 1 square equal to 1 foot.
The water pipes and irrigation system components appear on this drawing as a minor detail.
The beds are divided into groups with similar plant families growing in each group. This will help facilitate Crop Rotation and Planning. Caregivers are asked to grow only those crops assigned to their beds, following the established plan, again so that crop rotation and companion planting can be facilitated easily.
For our first season planting the A beds hold leeks, lettuces, chard and green onion. B beds hold tomatoes, peppers, and basil. C beds hold cucumbers and squash with sunflowers. D beds hold heirloom pumpkins, chard and quinoa, edged with cosmos and alyssum. E beds hold potatoes and bush beans. G and H beds hold black-eyed peas, chard, potatoes, bush beans, calendula, beneficial flowers and herbs. Details about the individual beds and what is happening in each will be added as we go along, and caregivers will be encouraged to add notes about their own experiences as well.
